Trademark Search (Basic)
Find out, before you spend money on a name, whether US federal trademark records already hold something that looks or sounds like it.
Turnaround: usually within one hour; sometimes up to 24 hours. Pay per search, no subscription.
Who it is for
- Founders choosing a company or product name before printing, branding or buying a domain
- Small businesses launching a new product line, service or slogan
- Designers and agencies checking a client name before presenting it
- Authors, creators and Etsy or Amazon sellers naming a brand
- Anyone who wants a first look before paying an attorney for a full clearance
What it does
You tell us the name and what it will be used for. Primoris compares it with US federal trademark applications and registrations, looking for the same name, similar spellings and names that sound alike, and shows the status and the goods and services of each close mark. You get a plain-language rating and a list of points to discuss with an attorney.
Key capabilities
- Exact, similar-spelling and phonetic (sounds-like) matching against US federal records
- Status of each close mark (live or dead), owner, class and the goods and services it covers
- Goods and class overlap, so a similar name in an unrelated field is ranked lower than one in yours
- A short web check for unregistered use, with findings labelled unverified
- Plain-English summary first, technical detail for your attorney after it
How it works
- Create an account and open Trademark Search (Basic). You see the price, turnaround and limits before you pay.
- Enter the mark, the goods or services it will cover and a short description of the business.
- Pay for the search by card, or apply a voucher.
- Primoris searches the USPTO records for exact, similar-spelling and sound-alike marks, narrows them to the closest and compares goods and classes. A short web check for unregistered use runs alongside.
- Primoris verifies the citations against the source records and drops anything it cannot verify.
- Your report is ready usually within one hour, sometimes up to 24 hours. You get an email, and the report (web view and PDF) is in your account.
What we search
Each report also states, in its Search Scope and Limitations section, the date each source is current through. See Sources for all products.
| Source | What it covers | Data current through / refresh | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPTO federal trademark records | US federal trademark applications and registrations, matched by spelling and by sound; status, class and goods/services shown | USPTO bulk data, loaded from the daily files; each report states the date it is current through | Very recent filings may not be loaded yet. No state registrations, business names or domain names. No logo or design-mark image comparison |
| Web check | A short search for signs of the same or a similar name in use without registration | Run live on the report date | Findings are labelled unverified. It is not a search of common-law rights |
What you get
A report in three parts, as a web page in your account and a PDF you can download, with an email when it is ready.
Part A: Summary
One page, plain English
- Risk Factor Rating (High, Medium or Low) with a one-sentence meaning
- A three-sentence verdict: what we searched, what we found, what drives the rating
- Top matches table: mark, owner, status, why it matters, closeness
- Points to discuss with an attorney
Part B: Technical detail
For attorneys and careful readers
- Your submission as we understood it
- Potentially conflicting marks ranked by match type: exact, phonetic, spelling variant, goods or class overlap
- Per-class view and live versus dead status
- Web findings (unverified)
- What drives the rating and what would lower it
Part C: Appendix
Method, full tables, limits
- Full match tables, including lower-ranked candidates
- Method, queries run and sources
- Search Scope and Limitations, with the data-currency date
- Disclaimer

First page of a sample report
The data in samples is fictional. Real reports follow the same layout.
See all sample reportsWhat you provide
- The mark
- The name or phrase you want to check.
- Goods or services
- What the mark will be used for. Overlap with a conflicting mark's goods drives the rating.
- Business description
- A sentence or two. No file upload is needed.
Uploaded files are deleted once the report is complete.
What it does not cover
- State trademark registrations
- Unregistered (common-law) use beyond a short, unverified web check; business-name and domain-name registers
- Foreign and international registrations (planned for Trademark Search (Advanced))
- Logo or design-mark image similarity (planned for Trademark Search (Advanced))
- Legal advice, or an opinion on registrability, infringement or clearance
- A guarantee that a registration will be granted
Risk rating explained
Every report opens with a Risk Factor Rating. The words, not the colour, carry the meaning. The rating is a screening aid, not a legal finding.
- HIGH RISK
- A very close mark, identical or nearly so in spelling or sound, is live and covers related goods or services. Worth a careful look with an attorney before you go further.
- MEDIUM RISK
- Related marks exist but with meaningful differences, for example different goods, or a weaker resemblance in sound or spelling.
- LOW RISK
- No close mark was found in the sources searched. Absence of results is not proof that nothing exists.

Frequently asked
- Does it search state trademarks or business names?
- No. It searches US federal trademark records only, plus a short web check. State registers, business-name registers and domain registrations are not searched.
- Will it tell me if I can register the name?
- No. It is a conflict screen that lists marks which look or sound similar. It is not an opinion on registrability, infringement or clearance. Only a trademark attorney or the USPTO can address that.
- What does "sounds like" matching mean?
- Names that are spelled differently but pronounced alike, such as a one-letter change, are found by phonetic matching and ranked next to exact and similar-spelling matches.
- My name is a logo. Can I upload it?
- Not in Basic. Basic compares word marks only. Logo comparison is planned for Trademark Search (Advanced), which is coming soon.
- How current are the trademark records?
- Records come from USPTO bulk data loaded from the daily files. Each report states the date its data is current through, and very recent filings may not be included yet.

Primoris reports are automated screening reports. They are not legal advice and not an attorney opinion, and no attorney-client relationship is created. A gap in the results does not prove that nothing exists. Talk to a registered patent or trademark attorney before filing or relying on a report.
